Gary Grefenberg noted that the phenomenon of immigrants living in close proximity together was not
new in the history of American immigration; Pat Trudgeon agreed.
Grefenberg suggested that the City Code occupancy limits could be revised so that infants and very
young children were not counted as occupants. Kelsey responded that these existing limits were not in
the rental licensing proposal, but were in the City Code. Grefenberg volunteered to work with the
Roseville building inspectors to actually determine what these limits were and their impact on Karen
families.
Jeanne provided information about Section 8 housing in Roseville and encouraged Mr. Vang to get
families to get on waiting lists for project -based Section 8 housing. Mr. Vang said that many families are
not yet confident enough to move away from other Karen speakers. Many of the refugees do not have
the skills or life experience for living in apartments distant from their extended families and other
community members.
Jeanne offered several social services and housing resources to Mr. Vang.
Participants agreed to continue to meet together to address concerns and build relationships and provide
support for Roseville's newest residents.
Addendum
After the meeting concluded HRC members Grefenberg and Groff discussed with Mr. Vang the
advisability of he and his staff meeting with the Human Rights Commission at their next meeting, and
the possibility of a larger Karen community meeting with the HRC in collaboration with KOM. Mr.
Vang welcomed both meetings, and agreed that he and some of his staff would meet with the HRC at
their next meeting on October 16th at City Hall.
Gg;cc
