October 16, 2013
Item 6.c
Essay Contest
October 9, 2013
The following e-mail was transmitted to me and Carolyn by Kris Doneen shortly after she
received it in late August.
It is transmitted to you for your information. I have high - lighted two questions which you may
wish to consider.
At our October 16th Commission meeting Carolyn Curti will also need two commissioners to
volunteer to read all essays and mutually select those they feel merit consideration of the full
Commission.
Gary G
From: "JEFFREY BIBEAU" <JEFFREY.BIBEAU(aisd623.org>
Sent: Tuesday, August 27, 2013 3:15:36 PM
Subject: RE: Invitation for Feedback on Rubric: Human Rights Essay Contest
Hello Kristin,
I just met with the Social Studies Department and we are planning to continue to participate in the
Human Rights work.
We understand that the question and essay itself is driven by the League of Minnesota Human Rights
Commissions. Would it work if the essay still followed the League's guidelines but internally to
Roseville there were some sort of recognition for other entries: Art or poster /project also Individual
and Group entries. There weren't need to be cash prize as students would likely feel honored just
being acknowledged for other areas of "smartness' .
We also, every year, have some students who have some type of exceptional circumstance that
prevents them from meeting the essay pick -up deadline. Since the essays aren't all judged at the
same time, could there be some flexibility for special circumstances of "late" entries? Evidently this
has impacted a handful of students every year.
On this end, to increase awareness of Human Rights and also increase writing skills, we are
partnering up with the English dept for construction of the essay (SocSt teaches content/ English
teaches 5 paragraph essay). If the contest were opened up to projects we would also attempt to
partner up with the art department.
We appreciate you energy and patience in working with us to make the process work for all parties.
Lastly, do you know when we can expect to get this year's question?
Thanx,
Jeff
