REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION

DATE: 10/03/89

ITEM NO.: F-1

Department Approval:

~

Manager Reviewed: Agenda section:
~ Reports and Recommendations

Item Description: Canvass of 1989 Primary Election.

The Council, at its September 27, 1989 Special Meeting, requested the
Secretary of State to conduct a recount to verify the accuracy of vote
in Precinct 5.

Representatives from the Secretary of State's office conducted the
recount on October 2. Attached is a copy of their report. Also attached
are the Primary Election Results including the changes in Precinct 5.

During the recount, it was determined the probable cause for the votes
not being counted in Precinct 5 was that some marking pens were being
used that are not read by the sensors in the voting machines. The
machines were functioning properly. In future elections, only the
correct pens will be available in the voting polls. The necessity for
this will be emphasized to the Election Judges during the training
sessions.

COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED:

Motion that the Council has canvassed the results of the Primary
Election of September 26, 1989, including the recount of Precinct 5
conducted by the Secretary of State's office, and the revised results
are as follows:

Council Members (3 positions)

Name
Joanne Cushman
Dean Maschka
Brenda Thomas
Pat Johnson
Kathie Salverda
R.
