Department Approval <br />Item Description: <br />f�� <br />� <br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br />Human Rights Essay Contest Winners <br />Date: April 7, 2014 <br />Item No.: S.a <br />City Manager Approval <br />��--�.-9�-�-- <br />BACKGROUND <br />Each year the Human Rights Commission holds an essay contest for sixth, seventh and eighth <br />grade students within the Roseville Area School District boundaries. This year more than 100 <br />students from RAMS entered the contest. Commissioners conducted an anonymous review of the <br />essays. Names of the students were not known until after the winners were selected. <br />This year we asked students: <br />• Prejudice and stereotypes affect the way we perceive and interact with each other, even <br />when we don't realize it. How do stereotypes affect our society and how do they damage <br />human rights? <br />Reference the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the United <br />States Constitution, the United States Bill of Rights or the Minnesota Human Rights <br />Act. <br />The Commission will recognize the following students and teachers: <br />Firstplace Elijah Sailer-Haugland 8th Grade Mr. Gary Schwingle & <br />Mr. Jeff Bibeau <br />Second place Ailsa Schmidt 8th Grade Mr. Lee Thao <br />Second place Ashley Chavez 8th Grade Mr. Lee Thao <br />Third place Olivia Ogwangi 8�' Grade Ms. Crystal Archer <br />Honorable Mention Hannah Bruns 8th Grade Ms. Crystal Archer <br />Honorable Mention Isabel Lieb 8th Grade Mr. Gary Schwingle & <br />Mr. Jeff Bibeau <br />Honorable Mention Teague Bogenhold 8th Grade Mr. Gary Schwingle & <br />Mr. Jeff Bibeau <br />Honorable Mention Katie Nguyen 7th Grade Mr. Lee Thao <br />Honorable Mention Anne Bensen 8�' Grade Mr. Lee Thao <br />The first, second and third place winners will be invited to read their essays.
