PAGE 2 - ARCADE SURVEY INQUIRY

EAGAN: This city has one arcade which is called the Grand Slam.
This is a problem with the police. One officer was assaulted by
gang members of the Crypts. This facility had a small dance floor
that attracted gang activity. The Crypts, as well as a vietnamese
gang, frequents this arcade. The pOlice officers use to work off-
duty at this arcade, in fact, two officers at a time worked there,
but now they refuse to do so. One officer was quoted that he would
not work there for $100.00 per hour - it IS that bad. The dance
floor portion was closed the night of the assault, and subsequently
was closed by management, however, management has just recently
been considering the reopening of the dances. This is now a
private club where there is a fee involved for membership which
does not solve the problem. There are assault calls constantly on
weekend hours. A second arcade wanted to open up in the city but
was denied a permit by the council. They have equal problems at
the pool hall called The Pocketts.

MAPLEWOOD: They have two year-round arcade centers and both of
them are located in the Maplewood Mall. There is daily security
from the police department, off-duty, seven days a week, in the
evenings; at the Circus. The other arcade is an older group and
they police themselves. The mall has it IS own security and
officers are constantly stopping by, so they have no major
problems. Their problem lies with the pool hall across White Bear
Avenue called the Plaza Billiards. This is called j ob security for
the "Juvenile Officer", as quoted by one of the officers. The
Circus opened a small dance floor that required the hiring of two
off-duty police officers, but was discontinued due to the
attraction of large crowds that became too hard to handle.

ST. ANTHONY: There are two arcades located in this city. The
first one is called Bonols and is located at Apache. This was
formerly owned by a Minneapolis Police Officer who kept a tight lid
on the clientele. They use to have a band and dance floor on
Friday nights, however, it has ceased due to many problems, which
includes large crowds of rowdies. There are disturbance-type
calls, and, runaways are also picked up there: no major problems.
The other arcade is called the Fun Center and is in st. Anthony
Shopping Center. It seems that this location is frequented by the
problem kids in the city. Neither arcade has security and the
types of calls range from thefts from autos, to vandalism, to
careless driving incidents.
