Much
of this analysis took place at the international level, with such organizations as the United Nations and African Union
being the central focus. However, in completing my M.A. thesis on the notion of individual responsibility in terms of
mass atrocity prevention, I came to realize that human rights are so much more than peacekeeping missions and
humanitarian assistance. Human rights are the way we all treat one another, each and every day, on a basic, ordinary
level. As such, I believe that the most effective form of prevention of large-scale issues is to build strong communities
resilient to discrimination and tolerant of the many voices that constitute them. It is for this reason that I would be
honored to serve as a member of the City of Roseville's Human Rights Commission.
What is your view of the role of this Commission/ Board?: I view the City of Roseville's Human Rights Commission (HRC)
as an opportunity to reify the complementary values of respect and what it means to live in community with all
members of our city. One of the fundamental components of human rights is the notion that they can be claimed: that
is, that if they are violated, there is a way in which human rights can be restored. The HRC is an excellent example of
how any challenges to or abuses of human rights might be addressed within the community. Likewise, I also envision
the HRC as being a proactive group of individuals who, rather than waiting for others to bring issues to their attention,
identify their own concerns and bring them to the attention of others on the commission and throughout Roseville.
Any further information you would like the City Council to consider or that you feel is relevant to the appointment or
reappointment you are seeking.: As a Human Rights Commissioner, I will take my responsibilities seriously and make my
involvement with the Commission a priority in terms of attending all meetings and participating to the fullest in the
