STATEMENT OF HARDSHIP

I am requesting a minor variation to the code for the following
reasons:

* When I purchased the house I was looking for a property that
would lend itself to renters. This would include providing
adequate offstreet parking. When asked about the driveway in
question the previous owners stated it had been there for at
least 17 years. The driveway was an important part of my
decision to purchase the house. I feel the worth of the house,
in relation to my needs, would be diminished by the elimination
of the driveway.

* My other driveway has a steep incline and during the winter
months it is often frozen over and impossible to drive up. One
roommate usually parks on the driveway in question during these
conditions.

* Another roommate has an infant son and access to and from the
main floor of the house is difficult from the basement driveway.
This roommate would have to carry the infant up and down the
basement stairs every day.

* Both roommates have stated that if this driveway were eliminated
they would look for another place to live. This would cause a
financial hardship for me.

* The option of trying to provide a driveway in this area that
meets code was explored by myself and The project coordinator,
Tony Thury. Our conclusion was, anything that met code would be
too close to the house and therefore esthetically unpleasant to
the neighbors and myself. It would also decrease the value of
the house.
