Waldron

Rick Jopke ~

Conversation with
concerning potential
of-way.

state right-of-way Engineer
Fuddruckers sign on state right-

TO:

FROM:

SUBJECT:

On January 3, 1992, I had a phone conversation with Mr. Adeel
Lari, the state right-of-way Engineer for our area. I discussed
two potential al ternati ves for signage to assist Fuddruckers.
Alternative #1 was to provide some kind of small directional sign
either on state right-of-way or City right-of-way south of County
Road C for north bound Snelling Avenue traffic. The sign would
direct people to turn right on County Road C to get to
Fuddruckers and/or the other restaurants in the area. Mr. Lari
indicated that they do not allow such directional signage on
state right-of-way within the metropolitan area. He also
indicated that if we put it on City land, that there would be
problems with state regulations which prohibit off premise
advertising signs. The only alternative that they might consider
would be just a generic sign indicating restaurants, turn right
which would not identify a specific restaurant.

The second alternative that I discussed with him was for a common
sign on the triangular piece of right-of-way north and west of
Slumberland which sits between Snelling Avenue and the Snelling
Avenue frontage road. Again, Mr. Lari stated that there would be
a problem with this because the State does not allow signs on
state right-of-way and if the City purchased the property, the
State would still have a problem because it would constitute a
off-premise advertising sign which would also be prohibited
adjacent to state right-of-way.

Based on this conversation , it would seem that there is no
possibility for constructing a common sign or directional
signage. However, we will review the potential in terms of the
generic restaurant sign with Fuddruckers.
