<br />Batteries continued <br /> <br />General purpose batteries include alkaline, carbon/zinc, or heavy-duty types, and are commonly used <br />in toys, flashlights, and portable radios. Most of these batteries are not recyclable. Some retail stores will <br />accept them for disposal. In Ramsey County, a homeowner can also dispose of used general purpose <br />batteries in the trash. <br /> <br />Rechargeable batteries (usually nickel-cadmium) and appliances which contain rechargeable batteries <br />may no longer be thrown in the trash, according to State law. They can be taken to one of several outlets <br />for recycling. <br /> <br />For a listing of places in Ramsey County which accept used lead-acid, button, general-purpose, rechargeable <br />batteries, or appliances which contain rechargeable batteries, ca11633·EASY. <br /> <br />Dried paint <br />Dried latex or oil-based paint may be safely disposed ofin the trash. Ca11633-EASY for information on how <br />to quickly and safely dry latex paint. <br /> <br />Empty containers <br />Product containers such as aerosol cans and propane tanks which are completely empty may be disposed of <br />in the trash. <br /> <br />Non·household wastes <br />The Ramsey County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) faciHty accepts only household-produced wastes <br />with hazardous properties. Non-household sources include the following: <br />· businesses and industries <br />· schools, churches, and non-profit agencies <br />· house painters (unless waste is only from their own house) <br />· professional artists, and other home-based businesses <br />· apartment and other rental property owners <br />· residential cleaning or home refurbishing businesses <br />· government agencies <br /> <br />Non-household wastes with hazardous properties must be managed as hazardous wastes. Call the Ramsey <br />County Public Health Department at 292-7898 for further information. <br /> <br />Tires <br />Anyone who sells tires is required to take back as many tires from a customer as that customer buys. There <br />also are places which win accept used tires for a fee. For information on tire recycling, call 633-EASY. <br /> <br />Used Motor Oil <br />In Minnesota, it is illegal to put used motor oil in the trash, or to spread it on the ground. State law requires <br />anyone who sells motor oil to either accept used oil, or post the nearest location for used oil drop-off. For a <br />listing of the many locations within Ramsey County which accept used motor oil, call 633-EASY. <br /> <br />Other automotive fluids, such as brake, transmission, or power steering fluid, can be combined with used <br />motor oil for recycling. Oil contaminated with kerosene, diesel fuel, or other solvents cannot be recycled. <br /> <br />Used Motor Oil Filters <br />Used oil filters should be thoroughly drained. Some hold up to one quart of oil. Some outlets which accept <br />used motor oil may also accept used oil filters. 1fno such outlet is available, drained oil filters can be thrown <br />in the trash. <br />
