Proposed Changes to Sign Ordinance

Page 3

ISSUE:

Directional Signs

EXISTING ORDINANCE:

Allows directional signs of 18" by 36".

PRINCIPLE BEmND EXISTING ORDINANCE:

In areas where there is one way access and egress drives, it is important to have directional
signs to indicate traffic direction. These signs are restricted to a small size so that they
reduce clutter and do not obstruct views.

PROBLEM WITH EXISTING ORDINANCE:

There is no definition of Directional Signs, including whether advertising can be placed on
them.

There is no definition of Off-Premise Directional signs.

The size of directional signs should be reevaluated.

PossmLE SOLUTION:

Distinguish between on-premise and off-premise directional signs.

Define "Directional Sign, On-premise" as a sign erected on private property which contains no
advertisement and is specifically intended to facilitate the safe movement of pedestrians and
vehicles into, out of, and circulating upon a site on which such signs are located.

"Directional Sign, Off-premise" is a directional sign located upon property other than the lot of a
development or use for which off-site direction is intended.

The sign area should not exceed 4.5 square feet.

IT desired, off-premise directional signs could be prohibited.
