She stated all the essays were very powerful. <br />Chair Groff stated he had talked with a few teachers and they had provided some feedback for <br />next year. <br />Commissioner Thao stated the essay contest has been building and this year there were teachers, <br />the school principal, and family members in attendance. She stated it is important to remember <br />not everyone is a writer and there may be other ways kids can express what human rights mean <br />to them. <br />Chair Groff stated the League of Minnesota Cities sponsors the contest and they use the <br />questions and essay. <br />Naturalization Ceremony <br />Commissioner Singleton provided his perspective of the naturalization event. The event was <br />well attended. <br />Ms. Collins recommended filming the event in the future. <br />Chair Groff stated there may be regulations regarding filming this type of event and it would <br />need to be researched. Ms. Collins stated filming and videotaping are permitted during the <br />ceremony according to the materials distributed. <br />Commissioner Thao suggested contacting the news channel next year and the newspaper. <br />Commissioner Singleton asked if Chair Groff had talked with the courts about hosting the <br />ceremony next year. <br />Chair Groff stated he had talked with them and the Commission would need to discuss it further. <br />They need to be notified by October and also let them know how many people the City would be <br />able to accommodate. Ms. Collins stated keeping the ceremony small made it feel more <br />intimate. <br />Vice Chair Becker suggested sending a letter of appreciation to Byerlys. <br />Rosefest Parade Update <br />Youth Commissioner Dao stated she had talked with a friend and their family. They would be <br />able to make a banner but at this time she does not have an estimate because she does not have <br />the banner dimensions. Ms. Collins stated the old signs have been stored and can be used as <br />well. <br />
