Field Range:
Purpose: To provide a range that simulates field conditions encountered while hunting
and to allow for shooting with bowhunting equipment.
Target Audiences: Any archers, especially bowhunters.
Equipment: Bows greater than 30 lbs; Any Arrows; target, field, hunting points and
broadheads. Bow racks with room for at least one bow per shooting lane.
Shooting Positions: Elevated platform shooting 10-12 feet above the targets; any of a
variety of field shooting situations depending on terrain and landscape; and, standard
ground shooting positions.
This shooting area should accommodate broadhead shooting into a pit for at least 6
weeks prior to the start of archery hunting seasons (July and August) and 3D shooting
with field/target shooting tips the rest of the year. Some of the 3D targets can be
removed during the 16 week pre -hunt period, leaving broadhead targets open for
shooting.
The 3D shooting would allow for advanced shooters to shoot animals at marked
distances from the shooting line and multiple targets should be able to be shot from
each shooting position. Smaller targets (turkeys, alligators etc.) should be located at
closer distances with larger targets being placed in the line of sight but farther from the
shooting line. All 3D targets should be anchored to the ground to prevent theft.
Broadhead targets should either be paper targets with a sand backstop or a commercial
target made to withstand the use of broadheads.
A covered shooting area can act as a shooting platform. Shooting from the platform can
occur at the same time as shooting from the ground if a safety canopy is used to
prevent dropped arrows from hitting the shooters below. The platform should include
poles that can be used to simulate treestand hunting conditions and one or two
simulated blinds under the platforms. Bow racks with built in quivers should be placed at
or near the shooting line on the ground and to the back of the upper platform. Benches
should be placed at least 5' behind the shooting line and built into the back of the upper
platform.
Ideally, shooting in this area should include 15 targets and 2-3 pits placed from 10-70
yards from the shooting line. In addition, a location where targets can be placed in water
near one end of the shooting platform could be useful to simulate bowfishing conditions.
In addition, a portion of this shooting area should be handicapped accessible although
the platform does not need to be handicapped accessible. Most handicapped hunters
unable to climb stairs would not be hunting from elevated positions.
