General Archery Park information:
1. Safety Options for Ranges:
a. Use of Open Space as Safety Buffer
i. For shooting 10-30 yards: Use a 15 yard safety buffer to the side and
25 yards behind the targets.
ii. For shooting from 31-50 yards: Use a 25 yard safety buffer to the side
and behind the targets.
iii. For shooting from 51-98 yards (98.4 yards is equal to the Olympic
distance of 90 meters).- Use a buffer that is 1/2 the distance of the
longest target on the range behind the targets and a 25 yard safety
butter to the side.
b. Use of Earthen Berm- At least 5 foot high earthen berms positioned within 10
yards around the perimeter of a range.
c. Use of Netting: A net hung loosely (not taut) at least 3 feet behind the targets
and extending at least 5 feet beyond the outermost targets will be sufficient.
Typical netting is of Kevlar and is 8' 3" in height. For added safety, two layers
of netting can be hung 2-3 feet apart as long as no one is allowed to walk
behind curtain except to retrieve arrows. NETTING SHOULD ONLY BE
USED IN THE BEGINNER AREA where archers may only USE BOWS WITH
less than 30 LBS DRAW WEIGHT AND LARGER DIAMETER ARROWS.
2. Shooting:
a, Each shooter should have a minimum of 24" of space on any shooting line
location, but 30" or more is preferred, especially for adults.
b. The direction of shooting should occur within 45 degrees of north (to prevent
shooting into the sun) unless the shooting line is well shaded from morning or
afternoon sun.
c. Permanent shelters or shade canopies over the shooting line are very
important to allow shooting in rain and to reduce the impact of direct sun or
excessive heat.
3. Accessibility:
a. For wheelchair accessibility, shooting lanes at least 48 inches wide are
required and grade should be 5% or less (with ramping conditions this can be
increased to 8.33%). Ground should be hard packed or paved.
b. Restrooms should be handicapped accessible.
c. Handicapped accessible parking and drop-off should be close to the shooting
ranges.
d. Handicapped access to each range and between ranges should be
accommodated.
