4/11/95

Dear Members of the Minor Variance Committee,

We are requesting a minor variance to add a porch onto oW'residence 645 Transit
Avenue. This porch would replace the existing front stairs that are faDing away from the
house. We would like to make this area larger to aJlow a tmn ar01md spot so it safer when
entering or exiting the front door. We have older parents two of who have difficulty
wa11cing. When they come to visit and stay with us they need help getting in and out if the
house. We have had one of them stwnble on the stairs when trying to enter the ftont door.
Because of circwnstances it wm probably become necessaty for one of them to eventually
live with us pennanently. We are Uyjng to keep that in mind when making any changes to
oW' house so we need a larger landing by the front door to accommodate at least two
people to stand safely while the front door is open. We also need to make the steps wider
to accommodate two people at one tUne.
Because of the close proximity of the living room window to the front door we would
like to extend the porch past the living room window. This way the post would not be in
front of the window and we could have handrails on both sides of the stairs. Also no one
would have to stand on the stairs while the door is being opened or closed, thus making it
safer for not only oW' parents but everybody else. This would also help keep inclement
weather out of oW' living room when the front door is open.
We are planning to add a family room off the back of oW' house in the future.
Because of the elevation of oW' back yard we would be unable to add a porch onto the
back of the future family room. Even if we could add a back porch, the front area would
still be the main entrance because of how the garage and driveway is situated.
We would also like to update the house so it lookS more like oW' neighbors. Our house
was built ar01md the tmn of the centwy and looks out ifplace. We believe this would help
bring oW' house closer to todays standards.

Thank. you for YOW' time and consideration.

dt~fJ~-(
fa? ~ 4JA;:Ii;/~

Stephen T.
