RosevilleÔs Housing and Redevelopment Authority (RHRA) works with residents and business owners to foster innovation in housing design and busi- ness development. With an eye toward sustainability, the RHRA is best known for hosting the annual ÑLiving SmarterÒ Home & Garden Fair, but the RHRA also advances projects that assist both businesses and home owners. Green Building/Remodeling Award And the 2013 Green Remodeling Award Goes to . . . Laurie Bennett & Ahi Bennuir of 2755 Merrill St. Laurie and Ahi currently live in LaurieÔs maternal grand- parentsÔ former home, and the extended Bennett family has lived in Roseville since the 1930s. When faced with the prospect of moving or remodeling Ï given the familyÔs long history in the community Ï Laurie and Ahi elected to remodel their 1953 rambler. They re nished a main oor bath and nished three-quarters of the basement by adding a bedroom, home theater, wet bar, and full spa bath! Lau- rie & Ahi remodeled with an eye towards green practices, using nger-jointed studs, salvaged lumber, and no-VOC Before paints and stains. Prompted by the results of an energy au- dit performed by the Neighborhood Energy Connection (NEC), they also insulated the basement walls, installed a super high-ef ciency, direct-vent water heater, and opted for Energy Star LED Before disk lights insteaof standard recessed lighting. d Got a project in mind that might qualify for the award? Using the criteria of the Lot Replacement Program, RHRA staff identi es properties that are functionally obsolete and works with the property owner to purchase the property. Once the RHRA owns the property, the buildings are razed and a Build Your builder or homeowner builds a sustainable home designed to complement the neighborhood Dream Home and meet the guidelines established by the RHRA. Connecting with Roseville Businesses In 2013 the RHRA Board launched a Business Retention & Expansion program, the rst step of which was carried out by a task force made up of people who live/work in Roseville and several local organizations. Task force members visited 41 non-retail businesses and asked owners to complete a survey to learn what their concerns are, if they have any plans to expand, and how the City could sup- port their needs in the ever-changing economic climate. The U-MN Extension Center for Community Vitality compiled BR&E Strategies the survey results in a report and presented their ndings Enhance, Promote & Develop the Roseville Business Environment to the task force in February. The report recommended 3 Create Identity, Community & speci c strategies (see box), which were presented to the Networking for Roseville Businesses City Council in a joint meeting with the RHRA on March 3.
