<br />(3) The granular backfill material shall be placed to the top ofthe trench of street <br />subgrade elevation in level, successive layers, having a thickness of not greater <br />than 12 inches. Each successive layer shall be thoroughly compacted as <br />specified prior to the placement or additional layers. If the specified compaction <br />is not being attained utilizing the equipment and materials available, the <br />thickness of the layers shall be reduced. The addition of water to th~ backfill . <br />materials , should be limited to achieving a satisfactory moisture content for <br />compaction control, ifnecessary, Compaction of the backfill should be attained <br />using vibratory, non-vibratory, or mechanical rammer-type compactors. The <br />type of compactor is dependent on the type of backfill material used. <br />Precautionary measures should be taken to assure that the compaction <br />equipment will not damage the underlying pipe. <br /> <br />(4) Backfilling shall not take place at any time unless approved compaction <br />equipment is available at the site. <br /> <br />,,;;J <br />...;1 <br /> <br />Ledge rock, boulders and large stones shall be removed to provide a cl~ance of at <br />least six inches below outside barrel of the pipe, or fittings, and to a clear width of six <br />inches on each side of all pipe and appurtenances for pipe 16 inches or less in <br />diameter; for pipes larger than 16 inches, a clearance of 9 inches below and clear <br />width of9 inches on each side of inside diameter of pipe shaU be provided. Adequate <br />clearance for properly jointing pipe laid m rock trenches shall be provided at bell <br />holes. <br /> <br />, <br />. <br />! <br /> <br />Excavations below subgrade in rock or in boulders shall be refilled to subgrade with <br />material approved by the ENGINEER or his representative and thoroughly <br />compacted. <br /> <br />.J <br /> <br />Where trench excavation is encountered which is unsuitable for backfill, such material <br />shall be replaced with granular backfill to be supplied by the CONTRACTOR at the <br />direction of the ENGINEER. <br /> <br />.j <br /> <br />Where pipes are of sufficient size to create an excess of backfill material, the excess. <br />shall be haufed to a location if directed by the ENGINEER and this location shall not <br />be beyond the Roseville City limits. Hauling and grading of the excess backfill will be <br />considered incidental to the project. <br /> <br />~ <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />j <br />1 <br />:1 <br />J <br />J <br /> <br />Any deficiency in the quantity of material for backfilling the trenches or for filling <br />depressions caused by settlement shall be supplied by the CONTRACTOR with no <br />extra compensation allowed. Any settlement which occurs within one year after final <br />acceptance shall be refilled by the CONTRACTOR with material supplied at the <br />CONTRACTOR's expense and with material approved by the ENGINEER. <br /> <br />Backfill in trenches on streets shall be placed to an elevation that will permit the <br />placement of base material and surfacing material. . <br /> <br />600-5 <br />
