August 2. 1996

To: Minor Variance Committee
Ci ty Counc i I

From: James Severson

Re: Variance for driveway

To whom it may concern:

My house at 500 W County Rd. B-2 was bui It in 1944. I purchased
the property in 1984. At the time I bought the property, the
driveway was in the same location it is today. I assume it has
always been there.

The driveway has a very sol id class 5 base that has been driven
on for many years. It is approximately one foot from the
property I ine. The beginning of the driveway runs between two
large I i lac bushes which have taken many years to develop a
stable root system.

Approximately 60 feet in from the street is a large pine tree
that is on the inside edge of the driveway. The pine tree stands
about 60 feet tal I .

, f

To move the driveway over 4 feet. I would have to dig up the
culvert and put in a new, one. I would have to cut down one of
the I i lac bushes and the huge pine tree. I have put alot of time
and effort into restoring the natural beauty of my property and
would hate to lose the pine tree as wel I as the lilac bushes. By
removing these "landscape landmarks", the value of my property
would be decreased.

It is also my concern that the sewer I ine may run along the side
of the driveway. By moving the driveway over 4 feet, it may
place it over the sewer line.

I have talked with Mrs. Wiley, the neighbor who lives next to the
driveway, and she has no problem with keeping the driveway where
it now exists.

For these reasons, I ask that you issue a variance so that I may
blacktop my driveway.

Thank You,

~/.~

James A.
