Request For City Council Action nt Approval: DATE: 04/12/99 ITEM NO: J-3 Agenda Section: LAND USE Midas Muffler Renovation, 2168 Snelling Avenue North 1.0 Background In 1989 the City Council approved a Conditional Use Permit to allow reconstruction of the Midas Muffler shop located at the northeast comer of Snelling A venue and County Road B. A portion of that Conditional Use Permit required that the building be constructed of brick and white facia - but not yellow. (Red/Brown brick was used.) The signage plans were to be reviewed by staff. In January, 1999, the Council requested Mr. Stranik to return with a set of computerized renderings of the corporate trademark color as well as building sketches illustrating new building renovations proposed. 2.0 Midas Request Mr. Joe Stranik has requested approval to renovate the existing structure within the constraints of the 1989 CUP. He requested direction regarding trademark building trim and sign color coordination. Midas is changing its franchise colors and building colors. Mr. Stranik is proposing new building wall (gray), signage (yellow and white), upgraded pylon (yellow and white), and potentially building trim in a dark purple color. The signage would be the same size or smaller. A color photo is attached for Council review. He will have samples available at the meeting. 3.0 Staff Comment Planning staff reviewed the proposal and the commercial neighborhood near the Midas shop. The colors proposed are on adjacent buildings and some signage in Har Mar. 4.0 Staff Recommendation Staff recommends approval of the Midas renovation within the 1989 CUP as consistent and minor changes in nature and proposes to issue permits to allow such renovation. No alterations or painting would be allowed on the original red/brown brick fayade.
