Tired
of developments that brought only more traffic and
noise, they banded together to turn the tide. After a lot
of work, a task force has found that the neighborhood
could live comfortably with an assisted-living
development.

MARIS A AGHA STAFF WRITER

As a new senior assisted-living center takes the first step
toward becoming a reality, several residents of the Roseville
neighborhood known as the James Addition smile and speak
readily at the prospect of the new neighbor.

Their ease was well-earned. In 1997, the Roseville City Council
assigned the James Addition task force to study the future of the
area, largely to address residents' concerns about traffic, noise
and encroaching commercial development.

"It was drawing a line in the sand," said task force member Roy
Nelson.

Residents had grown weary of development after development
that brought only more cars, lights and litter. First came Rosedale
Center, then Pavilion Place and what is now known as Rosedale
Commons. A proposal for a National Tire and Battery store was
the turning point a couple of years ago.

That's when the council stepped forward and the neighbors took
charge.

The result: The council rejected the tire store and the neighbors
speak of triumph.

http://www.pioneerplanet.com/news/mtc_docs/000422.htm

Page 1 of3

1/23/00
