.

CitY- of
~~

Minnesota

INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM

TO: Steve Sarkozy, City Manager
FROM: David Windle, GIS Coordinator - Community Development
SUBJECT: Renaming of West Cleveland Service Drive
DATE: 11/5/99

It has recently been brought to the attention of city staff that there are problems
associated with the current naming of West Cleveland Service Drive within the City
of Roseville.

.

Several recently established new businesses have indicated that their clients have
experienced difficulties in locating them on this frontage road. Upon contacting
existing established business, it was clear that these problems have been
encountered for some time. In addition, city staff I have spoken with have expressed
some concern over the use of the name 'Cleveland' on this service road which is
easily confused with Cleveland Avenue on the east side of Interstate 35W. Of
special importance is the confusion of the road naming from a public safety
response perspective. Businesses have also indicated that there is a lack of clearly
posted signage that leads to a compounding of the problem.

The city has recently invited representatives of businesses facing the frontage road
to meet to collectively decide on a new, unique and appropriate name for the road
between Long Lake Road at the south end and the crossing under the Interstate at
the north end. All parties agreed that there should be a unique name assigned. It
was also recognized that there would be some difficulties for existing businesses to
incorporate the address change, The meeting resolved that staff would continue to
work with businesses in adopting a new name in the most reasonable manner to all
parties.

.

Upon reaching a decision on the new road name and following City Council action
on this issue, city maps' a'nd databases will be modified and all relevant external
authorities will be notified.
