<br />Principle No. 10: Parking Lat Runoff <br /> <br />CASE STUDY: PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MARYLAND <br /> <br />(Source: PGDER, 1997) <br /> <br />Prince George's County MD promotes the use of bioretention facilities at commercial, industrial and <br />residential sites. This is an integral part of the County's strategy for development. The County is <br />encouraging low impact (i.e., low imperviousness) development even in commercial and residential areas. <br />The integration of bioretention facilities in landscape areas is a key part of this approach. <br /> <br />A mall developer in Prince George's County was required to construct a bioretention facility to treat runoff <br />from a new parking lot. The developer graded the lot to drain to the bioretention facility and planted it <br />with a variety of attractive and hardy plants (see Figure 10.2). The bioretention facility has worked <br />successfully for several years. Customer response to the attractiveness of the bioretention facility was so <br />great, that the developer constructed a "dummy" facility (i.e., it receives no stormwater runoff) in an <br />upland portion of the parking lot. <br /> <br />Prince George's County hopes to encourage other developers to use bioretention facilities by offering a <br />variety of incentives, including reduced stormwater management requirements and mitigation credit for <br />environmental impacts.
