Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />September 17, 2014 <br />Page 9 of 10 <br /> <br />Vice Chair Becker stated an annualized program would provide a time frame for residents and if <br />the Commission is nominating and awarding people throughout the year this may diminish the <br />importance of the annual award. <br /> <br />Commissioner Bachhuber pointed out that the criteria for the annual award does not state <br />Commissioners cannot make nominations just that they cannot receive the award. <br /> <br />Commissioner Carey stated she would prefer nominations be done through a single established <br />process. <br /> <br />Vice Chair Becker stated the Committee could work through the concerns of the Commission but <br />he would be more inclined to support a structured annual event with set criteria for determining <br />recipients. <br /> <br />Commissioner Bachhuber asked if any would be interested in being on the Selection Committee. <br /> <br />Commissioner Carey asked the Committee to provide information on how they would let <br />residents know about the program. <br /> <br /> <br />g.Essay Contest Update <br /> <br />Vice Chair Becker stated the City’s ENews Bulletin promoted the essay contest and it is <br />currently available on the front page of the City’s website. <br /> <br />Ms. Collins stated a letter had been sent to all area schools and the essays are due November 7. <br /> <br /> <br />Staff Report <br /> <br /> <br />a.Finance Update <br /> <br />Vice Chair Becker stated after deducting the $100.00 approved for the League of MN HRCs the <br />Commission has a balance of $260.00. There are no other events planned for 2014 and <br />recommended the Commissioners bring recommendations forward with ways to use the <br />remaining funds. <br /> <br />Ms. Collins suggested investing in parade t-shirts. She stated the parade banner invoice has not <br />been received yet but the funds are accounted for in the final balance. <br /> <br />Vice Chair Becker stated the City Council is currently going through the budget process. In the <br />information provided it appears the HRC budget is increasing $1700.00 but this will be to cover <br />the cost of having the minutes prepared. This is a cost that has not been accounted for by the <br />HRC previously. He also pointed out that the budget for 2011 shows expenditures in excess of <br />the budget amount. The HRC had received grant funds and these are not included in the budget <br />amount. <br /> <br />
