<br />I-I <br /> <br />Erny Czirok, of All Crematory, Orlando, Florida spoke about the <br />operating characteristics of the proposed crematory. Several of the <br />Councilmembers had questions/comments: Goedeke had questions <br />about the emissions; Klausing asked about the calibration of the <br />equipment; and Mastel commented about the lack of good <br />information from Roselawn Cemetery to the Planning Commission. <br />Anne Jackson, P.E. of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency <br />(MNPCA) spoke. Maschka inquired about mercury emissions and <br />the long-term effects of mercury exposure. Goedeke asked about <br />MNPCA regulations of radioactive material. <br /> <br />The City Council recessed from 8:50 - 9:05 p.m. <br /> <br />Jackson, MNPCA, answered Maschka's questions about location of <br />crematories, since '89, near residential areas. Maschka then asked <br />about ambient background noise. <br /> <br />Public Input: <br />1. fhrls Rp<>t'aElj~, 1754 Alameda Circle, opposing the proposed <br />crematory, presented 227 signatures on a petition, because of air <br />emissions, especially mercury, and because of property values, and <br />therefore proposed location in an industrial area or another <br />cemetery, perhaps to create a regional crematory. 2. Mr. Peterson <br />opposes, due to the unknowns associated with the cremations. 3. <br />Tom Tschida opposes, due to the emissions. 4. Matthew Nelson, <br />Roseville, opposes. 5. A resident of St. Paul opposes due to <br />property values. 6. Mr. Hirsh, Roseville, opposes due to emission, <br />especially radioactive emissions. 7. -Pet@ Zdkr, }"773 Alameda <br />Street, opposes due to emissions. 8. Patrick Hogan, Superintendent <br />of Forest Lawn since 1991, commented about the operating history <br />of the Crematory at Forest Lawn. 9. George Larsen. commented <br />about a higher stack height. 10. Gaml Rnst,-....+826 Alameda Street, <br />commented about state and federal regulations of emissions. <br /> <br />Maschka moved, Mastel seconded, to deny a resolution to approye <br />the request by Roselawn Cemetery for a conditional use permit to <br />allow construction of an 1,800 square foot crematory structure and <br />associated parking access improvement at 803 Larpenteur Avenue <br />and to review with legal counsel to prepare findings for final action. <br />The Council discussed the motion and the City Attorney <br />commented. Maschka withdrew the motion. <br /> <br />There was discussion about staff gathering additional information on <br />certain issues brought forward during the public hearing. <br />Unanswered questions: 1. Plastics in artificial hips. 2. Radio-active <br />implants, such as those used in cancer treatment. 3.
