HRC Update 12/2014, Bachhuber
Roseville Library’s “Many Voices, One Minnesota”
I attended Roseville Library’s programs, “Many Voices, One Minnesota.” Each session
featured a different topic: Asian Indians, Somalis, Karen, and Gay Rights. (I noticed that
the Karen were not originally included in the programming, so I notified Chong Bee
Vang of KOM of the opportunity.) All 4 presentations were very well done, informative
and well attended.
The conversation that followed the Gay Rights session included concern over bullying,
esp. among youth. I e-mailed the advisor of Roseville Area High School's Gay/Straight
Alliance, encouraging her to reach out to us if they need a partner in pursuing RAHS
Gay/Straight Alliance initiatives or issues. I also suggested that her students might want
to consider serving as an HRC Youth Commissioner.
Roseville ACT and Roseville AD
Trying to establish contacts or collaboration opportunities regarding mental and physical
health in Roseville, I attended 2 of Roseville’s ACT on Alzheimer’s community sessions.
The Roseville ACT on Alzheimer’s group is in its final stages of applying for a $10,000
grant. If awarded, it’ll be implemented during 2015. It is very likely that the HRC could
work with Roseville ACT, as well as Roseville Alzheimer’s and Dementia Action Team
(which is related to but not synonymous with ACT), to build community awareness of
Alzheimer’s and dementia and the services available to patients and caregivers in
Roseville.
Sarah Barsel of Roseville AD has expressed strong willingness to collaborate with the
HRC. I highly recommend that we meet with her once we’ve addressed how to proceed
with programming.
The following Star Tribune 11/22 article, “Businesses, downtown work to become
dementia friendly,” highlights ACT and the need for communities to address the need of
Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and caregivers.
http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/health/283594331.html?page=all&prepage=1&c=y -
continue
Fostering Interracial Intercultural understanding in Roseville
Star Tribune 12/1: “Working to defuse conflicts between Karen, black students”
Great article about what’s being done for and by students at Roseville Area High School
and in St. Paul.
