February 1 2004

Thomas Paschke
City of Roseville
2660 Civic Circle Drive
Roseville, MN 55113

Re: Property located at 3017 Sandy Hook Drive

Dear Mr Paschke,

I understand that there are questions regarding the width of the proposed attached third
stall garage at 3017 Sandy Hook Drive. The concern seems to revolve around why it is
necessary to have a fourteen-foot wide garage in order to have a ten-foot wide overhead
garage door. The answer has to do with the new International Residential Code (IRe).
The new code requires that any opening in a wall cannot be within 2' -8" of a corner
(IRC, Sec R602.1 0.6). This section discusses Braced Wall Panels and Alternate Braced
"Vall Panels. The IRC allows for opemngs closer to a corner than 2' -8" but only if other
reinforcing measures are used. Enclosed is a diagram of an Alternate Braced Wall Panel
that has been accepted by Roseville for those situations that require a Braced Wall Panel
less than 2'-8". The ability to use the necessary means to meet the requirements for
Alternate Braced Wall Panels dictates that, ideally, a two foot wall be used on each side
ofthe overhead door opening. Consequently, a ten-foot garage door requires a fourteen
wide garage.

I hope this answers your questions. If you have any questions, please call anytime.

Sincerely,

Lee Slagter
Project Coordinator
