Gelbach 1 2 City CouncilDirection to Parks and RecreationDept 3 Excerpted From – Minutes City Council Meeting DRAFT 4 Monday, November 17,2014 5 6 Joint Meeting with Parks and Recreation Commission 7 8 Parks & Recreation Commission Chair Dave Holt 9 Commissioners Lee DiedrickandJerry Stoner 10 Parks & Recreation Director Lonnie Brokke. 11 12 Chair Holtprovided a brief reap of activities of the Commission since last meeting with 13 the City Council; and expressed the Commission’s interest in meeting jointly on a quarterly basis 14 as agenda topics provide applicable. 15 16 Members addressed items as detailed in the Request for Council Action (RCA) dated 17 November 17, 2014. 18 19 20 21 Deer Population in Roseville 22 Commission isseeking direction from the City Council on specific issues with managing the 23 deer population. 24 25 Overview 26 27 To date Parks and Recreation have explored preliminary information on the logistics and process 28 for a managed hunt in Roseville. More discussion and direction is needed prior to pursuing a 29 managed hunt due to the different population densities of deer across Roseville 30 Parks and Rec feels that additionalinformationis needed including: 31 Costs o 32 Control mechanism o 33 Control options for individuals and control options for the community other than simply o 34 engaging in a hunt. Possible action itemsbased on Council discussion. 35 36 Find out how other communities respond to the deer population problem. 37 Need for joint effort by communities to address this regional problem. o 38 Include Ramsey County, as well as neighboring communities. o 39 Examine the possibility and/or value of of partnering with other communities region- o 40 ally, not just jurisdictionally. 41 Identify successful and/or non-successful methods, measures including both hunt and non- . 42 hunt control options. Also gather more tracking data and information 43 Provide information on if and how City could help individual residents having issues o 44 with deer devouring their plantings. 45 Provide variety of options and recommendations to the City Councilfor review and possible 46 action.
