Department Approval:
TP\DPW

Item Description:

A request by ISD 623 to approve a GROUND SIGN at Brimhall School,
1744 County Road B (PF3607).

1.0 REQUESTED ACTION

1.1 Lawrence Sign, on behalf of ISD 623 and Brimhall Elementary School has made
application for a sign permit to install a ground sign (monument) at 1744 County Road B.

2.0 STAFF COMMENTS/RECOMMENDATION:

2.1 Section 1009.031 (City & Public Signs) states: Except for traffic related signage, all
permanent city, school, or other governmental unit signage including flags must be
approved by the City Council.

2.2 Section 1009.03M (Ground Signs) states: In lieu of a pylon sign, a ground sign would be
permitted. Ground signs may be of equal sign area allowed for pylon signs in the same
zoning district. Ground signs shall be limited to a maximum height of 8 feet. Ground
signs may be set back from street rights of way a distance equal to Yz of the setback from
pylon signs in the same zoning district.

2.3 Section 1009.04Al and A2 discuss the allowances for signs in residential zones.
However, this Code section does not mention city and/or public signs and specific
allowances.

2.4 The City Planner has concluded that a ground sign (monument sign) of up to 50 square
feet in size, no taller than 8 feet in height, and set back a minimum of 15 feet from the
property line is a reasonably sized and placed sign for an institutional use like an
elementary school. The new sign will replace an existing sign of similar size.

3.0 SUGGESTED COUNCIL ACTION:

3.1 BY MOTION APPROVE THE SIGN as a feplacement for the existing sign fOf
Brimhall Elementary School, up to 50sq. ft. in size, no taller than 8 feet in height, and
set back a minimum of 15 feet from the property line adjacent to County Road B.

NOTE: In the near future the City will have a similar request for signage around the City
Hall complex.

PF3607_RCA_l10804.docPage 1 ofl
