Date: March 2, 2014
Item: 6.a
Women’s History Month
March 2015
Whereas
: The City of Roseville is committed to recognizing and honoring contributions of
all members of our community; and
Whereas
: In 1980 the Joint Congressional Resolution declared the week of March 8 as
National Women’s History Week, and in 1987 Congress expanded the celebration of women’s
contributions to the entire month of March; and
Whereas
: The movement recognizes and celebrates contributions that women of every race,
class and ethnic background have made to the world; and
Whereas
: It was not until 1833 that Oberlin College became the first college in the United
States to admit women; and
Whereas
: Even as “coeducation” grew, women’s courses of study were often different from
men’s, and women’s role models were few, as most faculty members were male; and
Whereas
: Against social convention and often legal restraints, women have created a legacy
that expands the frontiers of possibility. They have demonstrated character, courage and
commitment as mothers, educators, institution builders, business, labor, political and community
leaders, relief workers, religious leaders, and CEOs. Their lives and their work inspire girls and
women to achieve their full potential and encourage boys and men to respect the diversity and
depth of women’s experience.
Whereas“Weaving the Stories of Women’s
: The 2015 National Women’s History Month,
Lives”
weaves women’s stories – individually and collectively – into the essential fabric of our
nation’s history.
Now, Therefore Be It Resolved
that the City Council hereby declare March 2015 to be
Women’s History Month in the City of Roseville, County of Ramsey, State of Minnesota, U.S.A.
In Witness Whereof
, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Roseville
to be affixed this twenty-third day of February 2015.
________________________
Mayor Daniel J. Roe
