Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month <br />May 2015 <br />Whereas: The month of May commemorates the first Japanese immigrants to the United <br />States on May 7, 1843, and the transcontinental railroad completion on May 10, 1869 (Golden <br />Spike Day); and <br />Whereas: In ] 978, President Jimmy Carter designated the first week of May as Asian- <br />American Paciiic Islander Heritage Week, and in 1990, President George Bush expanded the <br />holiday to the entire month of May; and <br />Whereas: From the early 1800s to today, Asian and Pacific Islander peoples have made <br />lasting contributions to and have played a vital role in the development of the United States; and <br />Whereas: Roseville recognizes the rich cultural heritage representing many languages, <br />ethnicities and religious traditions that Asian-American and Pacific Islanders bring to our <br />society; and <br />Whereas: Roseville recognizes Asian-American and Paciiic Islander Heritage Month's 2015 <br />theme of "Many Cultures, One Voice: Promote Equality and Inclusion:" and <br />Whereas: Roseville celebrates the contributions of millions that Asian-American and Pacific <br />Islanders have made to the American story and reminds us of the challenges they face as they <br />continue to embrace the American dream; and <br />Whereas: By recognizing the accomplishments and contributions of Asian-Americans and <br />Pacific Islanders, Roseville celebrates the inclusion of all people in building a better future for <br />our citizens. <br />Now, Therefore Be It Resolved that the City Council hereby declare May 2015 to be Asian- <br />American andPacific Islander Heritage Month in the City of Roseville, County of Ramsey, State <br />of Minnesota, U.S.A. <br />In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Roseville <br />to be affixed this twentieth day of Apri12015. <br />Mayor Daniel J.
