REQUEST FOR HRA ACTION
1
2
Date: 08-03-15
3
Item No: 9b
4
Staff Approval: Agenda Section:
5
Action Item
6
7
Item Description: Discuss Roseville Living Smarter Home and Garden Fair
8
9
10
11
Requested Action
121.0
13Discuss options for 2016 Living Smarter Home & Garden Fair and provide direction
14regarding its future.
15
Background
162.0
17Beginning in 1996, the City of Roseville, the Roseville Area School District 623, and the
18Roseville Family Collaborative sponsored the Home and Garden Fair to provide a place
19where present and future homeowners could learn about the latest housing improvements
20and construction techniques from experts in the following areas: architecture, home
21remodeling, landscaping, gardening, materials suppliers, financial services, and housing
22inspections. Since its inception, the event has been held at the Fairview Community
23Center and is open to the public free of charge. The Home and Garden Fair was
24“rebranded” in 2009 as the Roseville “Living Smarter” Home and Garden Fair and
25focused on 3 core areas: Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Home Improvement,
26and Gardening for Healthy Living.
27
28The RHRA has, at various times, discussed whether or not to continue the Living Smarter
29Home and Garden Fair. To facilitate the continuation of this discussion, staff is
30providing feedback from last year’s Fair, as well as information about the costs
31associated with the Fair as it is currently run (see Attachments A, B, and C). Staff also
32researched alternative ways to present the Fair and has included cost estimates for each of
33those alternatives.
34
Current “Living Smarter” Home & Garden Fair Cost Summary
35
36Attachment A shows the income and expenses of the Fair for the past few years.
37Additionally, a summary of the RHRA staff time and other departments’ staff time spent
38in planning, setting-up, and presenting the Fair is included below:
39HRA Executive Director: 260 hours (15% of overall time * 2080 hrs = 312 hrs)
40Oversee all aspects of the Fair
o
41HRA Admin Assistant: 624 hours (30% of overall time * 2080 hrs = 624 hrs)
42Manage day-to-day activities of the Fair
o
43Volunteer coordinator: 14 – 16 hours
44Recruitment, coordinating and directing of volunteers
o
45Recycling Coordinator – 16 hours
RHRA_ Discussion of Home and Garden Fair (8-03-15) - Page 1 of 1
