Human Rights Commission Minutes January 20, 2016 —Minutes Page 6 of 9 Commissioner Carey suggested having a representative from the Karen community attend a Commission meeting so they can discuss ways the Commission could help the community. Chair Groff stated he would contact the KOM and request they attend a Commission meeting. Commissioner Slade asked if there was space in the parcel the City was considering for community gardens. Ms. Collins stated the International Institute and the KOM have located space for community gardens within walking distance of the apartment buildings. d. Review 2016 Calendar of Events Chair Groff stated the essays are due February 1. Ms. Collins stated they would be available for the Commission by February 10. Chair Groff suggested Commissioners attend the February 8 City Council meeting to discuss the Scope, Duties and Function of the Commission. Commissioner Christiansen asked if the February 17 Commission meeting should be rescheduled because Chair Groff would not be in attendance and they may not have a quorum. Ms. Collins stated she would ]ook at the City's schedule to find out when the space would be available. She would check for availability on February 10 so that the Commission would be able to distribute the essays for scoring. Youth Commissioner Cederberg asked if he would be scoring the essays with the Commission. Chair Groff stated Youth Commissioner Cederberg would be allowed to score the essays this year. Commissioner Slade asked what the timeline was for the Human Rights Award. Ms. Collins stated it has been on the website but they have not done a push for entries. The new Commissioners are expected to start at the April 20 Commission meeting. Youth Commissioner Cederberg asked if Youth Commissioners would be sworn in at the April meeting as well. Ms. Collins stated she would reach out to the applicants and see if they were still interested. If they were available they would be added to the City Council recommendation.
