April 20, 2016 <br />Item 6.a <br />Essay Contest <br /> <br /> <br />Background <br /> <br /> <br />Last fall, the Human Rights Commission submitted the annual human rights question to area <br />middle schools. <br /> <br />We have the right to vote in the USA. But sadly, less than 60% of the American people <br />participate in voting. Why do you think voting is an important freedom and what are <br />your suggestions or ideas to increase voter participation in the USA? <br /> <br />Essay should include at least 2 reasons why you think the freedom to vote is important <br />plus <br />at least 2 ideas or suggestions to increase voter participation in the USA. <br /> <br />Learn more about voting and find supporting evidence for your essay via: Universal <br />Declaration of Human Rights or 1965 Voting Rights Act, newspapers, magazines, books, <br />radio /TV segments or documentaries, personal interviews and legitimate online sources <br />(not Wikipedia). <br /> <br />The Commission received 113 essays from the middle schools in the Roseville school district. <br />Commissioners read and graded each essay. <br /> <br />Twelve students scored 76 points or higher out of 110 possible points. A tally of their scores is <br />attached. <br /> <br />Action Requested <br /> <br />Review top essay scores and determine which essays receive first, second and third place and <br />determine how many honorable mentions to award. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
