Roseville Finance Commission
Agenda Item

Memo
To: Roseville Finance Commission
From: Chris Miller, Finance Director
Date: January 10, 2017
Re: Item #5: Discussion on Financial Dashboard Target Audience & Informational Content

Background
At the December 13, 2016 meeting, the Finance Commission expressed an interest in continuing
discussions on the concept of creating a financial dashboard. Specifically, the identification of target
audiences and the types of informational content that should be displayed.

To that end, it is suggested that the Commission consider four questions to help guide the decision-
making process:

1) What unmet need or objective does the financial dashboard achieve?
2) What are the target audience’s information needs?
3) Does the financial dashboard fulfill those needs?
4) Is the financial dashboard the most effective way to fulfill those needs?

These are important distinctions because the existence of a financial dashboard is likely to produce value
only if the information is viewed and understood. They also help establish a reasoned justification for
the on-going commitment of taxpayer dollars.

Staff Recommendation
Not applicable.

Requested Commission Action
For discussion purposes only. No formal Commission action is necessary.

Prepared by: Chris Miller, Finance Director
Attachments: A: Not applicable.
