"4vc/J `
ilr:e
. -2;/VII
om: Pat Trudaeon
I *RVCouncil
MarkGaughan
,bject: FW:Thank you and next steps
ite: Monday,January 30,2017 9:10:00 AM
searing some information regarding the ordinance regulating the sale of dog and cats in pet
-s. Below is a response from Christine Couhglin of the Humane Society that was responding to
Jquiry by the Mayor regarding whether pets shown for adoption are boarded overnight. I will
a copy of this email at the dais tonight.
rick Trudgeon I City Manager
1 792-7021 I I F: 651.792.7020
.trudgeon@cityofroseville.com
SEVILLE
C vic Center Drive I Roseville,MN 55113
cook 1 Twitter I YouTube
;
I -om: Christine Coughlin >
Sent: Saturday,January 28, 2017 1:50 PM
'o: Pat Trudgeon
)ubject: RE: Thank you and next steps
li Pat,
,
ank you for the information for Monday night. Thanks, too (in advance) for mentioning the
F ` gested change to the rescue group definition
a appreciate the Mayor and Council's concern for the welfare of animals left overnight. Here's
eat happens currently in Roseville pet stores that adopt out dogs and cats: rescue dogs being
owcased in pet stores are not kept overnight. The dogs are brought into the store for adoption
ants that last a couple hours (much longer and it causes undue stress) and then are returned to
eir foster homes. For cats: our understanding is there are two Roseville pet stores that house
scue cats for a limited time in the store. Both Chuck and Don's and PetSmart have cat cages where
Joptable cats are showcased for a period of time, waiting for adoption. They are let out several
mes during the day to run around and get exercise. Due to the very high population of cats that
_ed homes as well as their natural temperament, housing rescue cats in pet stores for a limited
i me (while providing quality care and exercise) works to facilitate adoptions and is fairly common.
i
ased on this and a desire to not disturb what is working well in the city,we would recommend an
aproach along the lines of the mayor's suggestion:
1
ogs shall not be kept overnight at a pet store. Cats, as defined in this ordinance from animal rescue
-ganizations, animal shelters or animal control authorities to be showcased for adoption. shall not
