April 19, 2017 <br />Item 6.B <br />Essay Contest <br /> <br /> <br />Background <br /> <br />A subcommittee of commissioners reviewed the 120 essays from middle school students in the <br />Roseville area. The subcommittee identified the top 24 essays. The top essays were then <br />distributed to all of the commissioners, including incoming commissioner Etienne Djevi. <br />Commissioners scored the essays and submitted individual scores to staff. A tally of the scores is <br />attached. <br /> <br />Please note that Commissioner Ed Johnsons scores are not included. They will be provided at <br />the commission meeting. <br /> <br />Action requested <br /> <br />The commission is asked to review the essay scores and to determine which essays are to receive <br />first, second and third place. The commission is asked to select essays to receive an honorable <br />mention. <br /> <br />Essay contest winners, their families and teachers will be invited to the May 8 council meeting to <br />be recognized and to receive their prizes. The top three winners will be invited to read their <br />essays. Following the presentation, participants will be invited to a reception. <br /> <br />The commission is also asked to approve monetary prize amounts and to approve a budget for <br />refreshments. <br /> <br />In 2016 the first place winner received $150, second received $75, third received $50, and <br />honorable mentions received $15. The previous year the first place winner received $100, and all <br />other prizes remained the same. The Commission spent approximately $60 on refreshments for <br />the reception following the presentation at the council meeting. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
