April 19, 2017
Item 6.B
Essay Contest

Background

A subcommittee of commissioners reviewed the 120 essays from middle school students in the
Roseville area. The subcommittee identified the top 24 essays. The top essays were then
distributed to all of the commissioners, including incoming commissioner Etienne Djevi.
Commissioners scored the essays and submitted individual scores to staff. A tally of the scores is
attached.

Please note that Commissioner Ed Johnsons scores are not included. They will be provided at
the commission meeting.

Action requested

The commission is asked to review the essay scores and to determine which essays are to receive
first, second and third place. The commission is asked to select essays to receive an honorable
mention.

Essay contest winners, their families and teachers will be invited to the May 8 council meeting to
be recognized and to receive their prizes. The top three winners will be invited to read their
essays. Following the presentation, participants will be invited to a reception.

The commission is also asked to approve monetary prize amounts and to approve a budget for
refreshments.

In 2016 the first place winner received $150, second received $75, third received $50, and
honorable mentions received $15. The previous year the first place winner received $100, and all
other prizes remained the same. The Commission spent approximately $60 on refreshments for
the reception following the presentation at the council meeting.
