Our Human Rights Commission discussed holding an
event to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act and was wondering if the
Roseville HRC would be interested in partnering with us on the event? The details, as presented to the
commission, are below. We have talked with the Roseville library and they have indicated that they would be
willing to host the event. We have not yet contacted Senator John Marty's office as we wanted to connect with
you first. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think this would be something your HRC would be interested
in doing?
th
Voting Rights Act of 1965,
On August 6, 2015 we will celebrate the 50 anniversary of the passage of the which was a
landmark piece of federal legislation that prohibits racial discrimination in voting. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed it
into law during the height of the American Civil Rights Movement.
In late July or early August, after the conclusion of the Slice of Shoreview, I would like to team up with the Roseville
Human Rights Commission and Senator John Marty for a community screening of Selma the Bridge to the
Ballothttp://selma.splcenter.org at the Roseville Library.
Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot is the true story of the forgotten heroes in the fight for voting rights—the courageous
students and teachers of Selma, Alabama, who stood up against injustice despite facing intimidation, arrests and
violence. By organizing and marching bravely, these change-makers achieved one of the most significant victories of the
civil rights era.
The sacrifices of those who fought so hard for equality should never be forgotten. In the 2012 presidential election, more
than 90 million eligible voters did not go to the polls. In the 18–24 age group, only six out 10 voted. And, in 2014, voter
turnout dropped to a 72-year low.
This 40-minute film, narrated by Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer, is a crucial reminder that each of us has the
ability to bring about powerful social change and will help inspire young people and communities across the nation to
exercise their right to participate in our democracy.
In 1965 Senator John Marty’s father, Martin Marty, participated in the Selma to Montgomery marches. In early March of
th
this year he and his father travelled back to Selma to commemorate the 50 anniversary of the event. WCCO did a story
on Senator Marty before he left for Selma, AL:http://cbsloc.al/1Exe1d9
--
Rebecca Olson
Assistant to the City Manager
City of Shoreview
4600 Victoria Street North
Shoreview, MN 55126
1
