September 20, 2017
Item8a.
Draft Action Plan
Background
The Commission held two special meetings during the month of August (Aug. 15 and Aug. 24) in
order to develop an action plan for the remainder of 2017 and 2018. The first meeting, the
Consensus Workshop, consisted of commissioners working to answer the following question:
What issues or topics should the Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission focus
on for the remainder of 2017 and 2018?
Commissioners had an opportunity to brainstorm broad topics and issue areas that they felt
met the mission of the Commissions purpose as outlined in City Code. A summary of this
workshopwas presented at the August 16, 2017 regular meeting, and is attached.
Commissioners then used these broad topics as a foundation to begin developing specific
actions that aligned with those areas and met the objectives to Evaluate, Engage and Advise the
City Council.
The commission met on August 24 in an Action Planning Workshop where they worked to
develop tasks, projects and ideas that they would like to focus for the upcoming year. These
ideaswere then affiliated with the topic areas from the Consensus Workshop to give context,
meaning and purpose to them.
The result of these two workshops was a better understanding from the commission of what
their priorities were and how they aligned with the purpose and direction of the commission as
a whole, and a concrete plan of action moving forward.
Attached is a draft Action Plan for review by the commission. The commission will meet in a
joint meeting with the City Council on October 9 to review the Action Plan and request
feedback from council and the proposed plan.
Staff will walk through the draft plan, highlighting some of the work the commission did over
the many hours they spent in discussions and planning.
Requested Action
Review the draft Action Plan and identify if any changes are needed prior to presentation to the
City Council on October 9.
