August 15, 2017
Consensus Workshop
Background
The Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission will hold a special meeting on
Tuesday, August 15, 2017. This workshop will be a facilitated discussion intended to develop a
work plan for the remainder of 2017 and 2018. This special meeting will use the Institute of
Cultural Affairs technique of facilitation called Technology of Participation. This meeting will be
a different format than a regular commission meeting and will be facilitated by staff liaison,
Rebecca Olson, who is trained in the facilitation technique.
The purpose of this Consensus Workshop is to come up with clearly defined issue areas,
categories or broad topics that the commission wants to focus on for the rest of 2017 and in
2018. The workshop is designed to get the commission thinking in broad terms that reflect the
commissions purpose, objectives, duties and functions as outlined in ordinance (attached). The
aim of this workshop is to have a list of topics or priority areas that the Commission desires to
focus on that can be used as the foundation for the next step at the Action Planning Workshop
on August 24 th. With that in mind, the question we will be working to answer is:
What issues or topics should the HRIEC focus on for the remainder of 2017 and 2018 that
reflect the commissions objectives to Evaluate, Advise and Engage?
This workshop will guide you through some of your ideas and thought processes, and therefore
there is not much preparation needed on the part of the commission. However, to get the
commission thinking about these ideas a few sample questions are below. These are intended
to give you an idea of the scale we will be focusing on at the workshop.
Think in terms of "How can we" (collaborate with others, improve city interactions with
residents and/or underrepresented groups, etc.)
Think in terms of "How best to" (promote inclusion of those from diverse backgrounds, increase
our participation among residents/businesses)
Think in terms of What topics are best to Advise on(policies/procedures, programs,
communication efforts, diversity, human rights, engagement, volunteerism, participation, etc.)
At the conclusion of the workshop a document will be prepared and provided that list the areas of focus
the commission has agreed upon. This document will be used at the Action Planning Workshop on
th
August24 to determine specific tasks that fall under each category or area and to develop timelines for
those tasks.
Requested Action
No action needed at this time.
