Regular City Council Meeting
Monday, October 9, 2017
Page 17
additional aspects to follow it made sense to keep the HRIEC up-to-date on the
process going forward and as proposals come forward to change policies and pro-
cedures that it then be appropriate to have those items go through the HRIEC for
additional community engagement as indicated.
Specific to the notion of staff being trained first, Mayor Roe noted that a lot of
other work was already going on in the community ahead of this staff training fo-
cus, suggesting that it was important that staff come up to speed in their training
and knowledge-base capacity as well. Mayor Roe opined that this is a good effort
for the city as an entity to pursue racial equity and interaction in the community
too, and would provide other areas to consider for staff, the City Council and
community-at-large, all efforts that he supported.
Roll Call
Ayes: Laliberte, McGehee, Etten and Roe.
Nays: None.
Mayor Roe encouraged Assistant City Manager Olson to bring this to the atten-
tion of the HRIEC at their next meeting. Mayor Roe further referenced previous
discussions he'd had with senior city staff related to community engagement ef-
forts that had been a result of his and Councilmember Laliberte's attendance at a
community engagement conference several years ago. Mayor Roe opined that it
made sense to get staff up-to-speed to and then provide training to HRIE advisory
commissioners to address the gap of knowledge between the industry and the
city's own volunteer commissioners, whether initiated by staff as applicable or up
to the City Council to decide whether a specific recommendation needed to go
through commissioners.
8.
