This is where small
groups and larger groups gather for organized parties permitted through the city, or where ad hoc small
groups gather to each lunch on a weekday. There is much more consumption of food at these locations
and therefore the generation of greater amounts of discards, both trash and recycling.
Pink fields represent collections that are greater that one and a quarter carts per months. This shows
that monthly collection for these locations may be insufficient.
There is also a good deal of variation between the peak months of the summer (June -August) and the
other months in early and late summer. This is an important factor in right -sizing collections for peak
months.
Time of Year
Carts of
Material Per
Month
Pavilion Peak
2.72
Pavilion Off -Peak
1.60
Non -Pavilion Peak
1.41
Non -Pavilion Off -Peak
0.88
Average Peak
1.87
Average Off -Peak
1.13
This chart details the size of the swing between peak and non -peak months of the season. It shows the
busier pavilions and the non -pavilion carts as well as a pilot area average.
Contamination:
One of the biggest challenges in public space recycling, like in parks, is that there is no one monitoring
what people put in the containers. It was one of the largest concerns expressed in the pre -pilot meeting
with parks staff as they have been working with the recycling in parks for years and have seen problems
occur in the past.
The following chart details the instances of contamination that occurred over the pilot. It is broken out
by collection location and lists each month.
