Introduction 31 With lots of help from staff, this primer has been compiled by sitting 32 commissioners who wish they hadsomething likeit when first starting out. This is 33 the essential stuff that nobody tells you outright, or if they did, you may have 34 missed it due to information overload. 35 New Parksand Recreation commissioners face a steep learning curve during 36 their first yearand our hope is to help you familiarize the concepts and terms 37 you’ll hear discussed. 38 What’s ourrole? 39 Feeling a little adrift when first starting is a given. We all did. Here are some initial 40 points to consider as members of the Parks and Recreation Commission: 41 We serve! 42 Parks and Recreation Commissioners serve the public, the citizens of 43 Roseville, Roseville businesses, visitors to Roseville and we serve anyone 44 using the parks, programs, facilities and natural resourcesin the Roseville 45 community. 46 There are ten of us, including a non-voting youth representative (volunteers 47 all)whohave been appointed to serve in an advisory capacity to the mayor, 48 City Council, and Parks and Recreation staff (mostly Lonnie) regarding 49 Roseville Parks and Recreation matters. 50 We rely on others! 51 We rely entirely on staff (and each other) to run the system, provide 52 information, explain what we are supposed to know, outline key issues, stay 53 abreast of all upcoming matters and report to the City Council on a regular 54 basis. We rely on citizens to give us feedback. 55 We interact with people! 56 Our part is to disperse into the community, listen and talk to residents and key 57 stakeholders, relay all relevant information to staff, advise and support the 58 Parks and Recreation staff in whatever waywe can. 59 We volunteer! 60 This is a volunteer position. Everyone has different demands on their time. So, 61 start where you are, use the gifts you have, and do what you can. 62 We appreciate your energy, commitment and input! 63 64 65 2 10
