(URL) <br />294 <br />https://www.cityofroseville.com/2786/Natural-Resources-Renewal <br />295 <br />296 <br />Deer Management Program <br />297 <br />What is it? <br />298 <br />In 2014-2015, the City began addressing theissue of a potential over- <br />299 <br />population by deer in the city.The Parks and Recreation Department took on <br />300 <br />the role of working with Ramsey County to count the deer in Roseville and to <br />301 <br />develop a management plan.After a great deal of public input, a decision was <br />302 <br />made to first attempt to reduce the deer population by a ban on feeding deer. <br />303 <br />This did not have a significant impact, so in 2016, the City Council authorized <br />304 <br />a controlled deer hunt to remove 20 deer from the city’s parks.One result of <br />305 <br />the 2016 deer huntwas the finding that the health of many of the deer in the <br />306 <br />city is not good, possibly due to over-population.The Parks and Recreation <br />307 <br />Department continues to monitor and work with Ramsey County and the <br />308 <br />Departments’ of Natural Resources and Agriculture onthis issue and to make <br />309 <br />recommendations to the City Council for future action. <br />310 <br />Why is itimportant? <br />311 <br />Over-population leads to hardship for the deer, as they do not have enough to <br />312 <br />eat.Roseville citizens request that some control measures be taken, as deer <br />313 <br />eat trees and plants in residential areas. Deer in the streets have led to <br />314 <br />accidents. They have achieved Tree City USA status by meetingthe <br />327 <br />core standards of sound urban forestry management, which are:maintaining <br />328 <br />a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at <br />329 <br />least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day. <br />330 <br />331 <br />The Parks and Recreation Commission serves as the Roseville Tree Board. <br />332 <br />The Commission provides input, advice and updates to the staff and City <br />333 <br />Council on all tree related issues including EAB. <br />334 <br />9 <br />17 <br /> <br />
