He conveyed that he feels a recommendation should be made to the City Council to <br />47reduce the deer population. <br />48 <br />49Commissioner Quick questioned how long the reduction effort would take, as he stated <br />50concerns that a 50% reduction of population in one year could affect the biodiversity of <br />51ecosystems. <br />52 <br />53Commissioner Gelbach askedif we could request the removal of injured deer by the USDA. <br />54Staff commented that it would be difficult as the hunt is done at night via thermal imaging. <br />55 <br />56Commissioner Hoag inquired if multiple locations could be utilized for the hunt, as he <br />57seconded concern about removing too many deer from one location. Also, he questioned the <br />58counts of Shoreview as many of the deer in northern Roseville would cross between the two <br />59cities. <br />60 <br />61Commissioner Heikkila clarified that the intention would never be to wipe out the deer <br />62population in Roseville. <br />63 <br />64Commissioners Recommendation: <br />65Commissioner Bole moved to recommend to the City Council to move forward with a <br />66removal of 20 deer in 2018/2019 and to continue with an ongoing reduction effort based <br />67upon the analysis and survey numbers. Motion passed <br />68unanimously. <br />69 <br />705)PARK MAINTENANCE AND PROJECT REVIEW <br />71Maintenance Superintendent, Jim Taylor, provided an overview of the 2017 maintenance <br />72operations and an upcoming look at projects in 2018. <br />73 <br />74The 2017 projects included park planning at 2134 Cleveland Avenue, 1716 Marion Street <br />75and the playground at Tamarack Park. Tree projects were completed at multiple parks <br />76including tree removals, plantings and EAB treatments. The Natural Resource Renewal <br />77Program had 88 new volunteers in 2017. Maintenance projects included: facility <br />78improvements (painting, new roof), upgraded puppet wagon, Harriet Alexander Nature <br />79Center (HANC) windows, new hockey goals, fountain repair, and maintenancefor recreation <br />80programs. <br />81 <br />5 <br /> <br />
