Roseville Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement <br /> Commission <br /> Agenda Item <br /> DATE: March 21, 2018 ITEM: 7d <br /> ITEM DESCRIPTION: Essay Contest Scoring <br /> Background <br /> The Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission is sponsoring an essay contest for <br /> sixth, seventh and eighth grade students who live in or attend school in the Roseville area. The <br /> essay question was distributed to principals and teachers in August, 2017. The deadline for <br /> essay submission was January 30, 2018. This year the question was: <br /> Disparities such as racism, sexism, and ageism- anion a othe s ....are still occul-1-1n <br /> today. Define and discuss one disparity and explain what you think the underlying <br /> cause is. What can be done to address Its Include personal anslor sourced <br /> examples. <br /> This year 54 essays were received. Attached is the draft rubric that was updated by <br /> Commissioner Petersen based off of the discussion at the January meeting. <br /> A number of commission members read all 54 essays and scored them based on the rubric. <br /> Attached is the scoring sheet of the essays. The commission is being asked to identify the top <br /> essays that will then be distributed to all commission members for final scoring. <br /> The tentative timeline for the essay contest is below. <br /> January 30— February 20 Essays are numbered and scanned. One set is <br /> redacted. <br /> February 21 HRIEC meeting Essays and rubric are distributed for first <br /> round of review. <br /> April 11 Commission submits scores to staff. Staff <br /> tabulate results. <br /> April 18 HRIEC meeting Commissioners review scores and select top <br /> essays to receive awards. <br /> April 19—27 Staff notify winners and their families, <br />
