They discussed volunteerism within their own cultures and strategies for
engaging diverse volunteers. She learned to be persistent when she is developing relationships,
and to make sure it is being done based on the other person's skill and not just the fact they are
from a diverse community. Offering incentives such as food and child care are ways to get past
barriers. There is ongoing research on this topic they hope to implement in the future.
Ms. Olson stated they also learned that volunteer does not mean the same thing to everyone and
provided ways to connect with communities. They spoke of immigrants and pointed out they are
often willing to help, but volunteering in the traditional sense may not be one of their immediate
priorities.
Commissioner Peterson noted they need to make sure they do not forget about the racial
profiling issue since the subcommittee has been disbanded. It is an important topic that needs to
be discussed with the full Commission.
Commissioner Djevi commented the Police department training at the mall has been moved to
January. He agreed to follow up with the Police department in order to be prepared if the HRIEC
decides to participate. He also announced the Ask A Veteran event will be on November 16 at
7:00 p.m. at the Library.
Commissioner Peterson announced there will be a discussion on the Minnesota Health Plan led
by Senator John Marry at the Falcon Heights City Hall on November 16 at 6:30 p.m.
