Item 8a. <br /> Park Planning Engagement <br /> Background <br /> Over the past few months, Commissioners signed up to attend two different on-going engagement <br /> events for new parks that are to be built at Marion Street and Cleveland Avenue.The purpose of <br /> attending these events was to evaluate the success of the city's engagement efforts. Parks and <br /> Recreation staff has done a lot of work on the back-end of the planning process, much of which was <br /> unseen and done outside of these events.The Parks and Recreation department uses their Community <br /> Relations and Public Engagement Plan when they design events such as these.That plan is attached. It <br /> may be helpful for the HRIEC to brainstorm bullet points in the following manner to evaluate what they <br /> observed. <br /> What did you see as successful? What opportunities are there to enhance the <br /> successes? <br /> Below are comments received from commissioners who attended one or more of the planning <br /> meetings. <br /> Commissioner Peterson Comments: <br /> Here are my thoughts on the park planning meetings I attended. I attended 1 session at the Marion <br /> street park and 1 session for the Cleveland ave park <br /> Successful <br /> addressing all residents questions <br /> allowing for residents to provide feedback <br /> having an interpreter at the Marion street park <br /> keeping the discussion on track and focused at Cleveland ave <br /> I thought the bounce house at Marion street was a good way to get people to come but ended <br /> up taking over the event <br /> Areas for improvement <br /> • At the Marion Street Park there was an interpreter but it seemed that having one was not <br /> enough. Additionally the boards that were there for the children and the adults to mark what <br /> their favorite things were was not clearly explained, although they definitely tried to explain the <br /> concept of putting a sticker on favorite item that was not clear to them. <br /> • Again at Marion street there was some definite communication gaps. I really felt like doing the <br /> same thing that was done at Cleveland just wasn't the right step. A concept board makes sense <br /> to us but made little to no sense to everyone there. It would have been better to have actual <br />
