REQUESTS VERSUS RECOMMENDATIONS
The table shown above shows a comparison of initial department
requests with the Manager's recommendations. Those areas where a
large requested increase was significantly reduced are underlined.
The following is a description of those underlined areas. For
additional information, please refer to the table entitled "1988
Budget Capital Outlay Requests," which follows the descriptions.
l. Fire
A. Personal Services
1. The Fire Prevention request included a full-time
Hazardous Materials Coordinator and two clerical
positions, to handle the potential work load caused
by a new Hazardous Material Identification Law. The
Manager's recommendation does not include.these posi-
tions, because it is not clear what the actual require-
ments of the law are and how best to respond to those
requirements.
B. Supplies
1. The request was scaled back to a level adequate to
maintain current service levels, and to support multi-
year programs for the replacement of major clothing
items and fire hose.
C. Vehicles
1. The request included the refurbishing of two pumpers,
a new pickup truck, and a new station wagon. The
recommendation includes the refurbishing of one
pumper to be partially funded by the trade or sale of
a pumper. The station wagon was related to the
request for a Hazardous Materials Coordinator, which
is not being recommended.
D. Capital Outlay
l. The Fire Prevention request again involved office
and computer equipment related to addressing the
potential requirements of the Hazardous Materials
Law. Again, these expenditures are not recommended,
because it is not yet clear what the requirements of
the law are.
2. Public Works Administration
A. Capital Outlay
l. The request included the pruchase of the Ultimaps
computerized mapping and data base system. It was
determined that the City should further monitor the
system's use by other cities, to get a better idea of
its costs and benefits.
c
