Roseville Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement <br /> Commission <br /> Agenda Item <br /> DATE: July 18, 2018 ITEM: 7c <br /> ITEM DESCRIPTION: Discuss 2018-19 Essay Contest <br /> Background <br /> The Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission will again be sponsoring an Essay <br /> Contest for students in grades 6, 7, 8 this year. In order to get the information to teachers in a <br /> timely manner, it is important that the Commission decide on and select a question for this <br /> year's contest. A list of questions from previous contests was provided at the last meeting. <br /> Based on discussion at the June meeting, the following topics for the 2018-19 contest were <br /> identified: <br /> 1. Human Trafficking <br /> 2. School Safety (including bullying) <br /> 3. War on Drugs (in the Philippines or U.S.) <br /> 4. Privilege <br /> Each commissioner was asked to brainstorm 1-2 questions on any of the topics and submit for <br /> consideration. The following questions were received: <br /> • What is your definition of privilege? Is it OK or morally wrong? Does it violate human <br /> rights? Give an example of when you or someone you know was negatively impacted by <br /> privilege? And positively impacted by privilege? Can privilege be reversed? How? <br /> • What is the difference between teasing and bullying? Does bullying violate human <br /> rights? What can you do to put a stop to the culture of bullying? How can you <br /> encourage other people to be more accepting of those who are different? What should <br /> the punishment be for bullying? Should it be different for cyberbullying? Give an <br /> example of when you or someone you know was bullied. Give an example of when you <br /> or someone you know bullied. How did someone help, or could have helped in the <br /> situation? <br /> 1 <br />
