81Commissioner Stoner suggested Cleveland Gardens Park because Horace Clevelandwas a <br />82prominent landscape architect in the areaand the fact that this pocket park will most likely <br />83always have a garden onsite. <br />84 <br />85Commissioner Hoag explained that he prefersthat individual areas have identifiers. He <br />86believes that the 2134 Cleveland Avenue area is the “Midland” area due to the wide use of <br />87the name in the area. <br />88 <br />89The Commission discussed the following rationalefor the Midland Gardens Parkname: <br />90“Midland” provides alocation marker for the Park <br />th <br />91Midland is apotentialnod to the 4Parallel <br />92The “Garden” name willdifferentiate it from the other Midlandlocations/businesses <br />93Thepark will most likely alwayshavea garden on-site <br />94 <br />95Commissioners Recommendation: <br />96Commissioner Gelbach moved to recommend the name of Midland Gardens Park for the new <br />97park at 2134 Cleveland Avenue to the City Council. Commissioner Hoag seconds. All in <br />98favor except Commissioner Heikkila. Motion passed. <br />99 <br />100The Commission discussed the name options for 1716 Marion Street. <br />101 <br />102Vice-Chair Baggenstoss suggested that plaques should be included at parks that have a <br />103backstory as he believe this would help in cultivating a deeper connection to our parks. <br />104 <br />105Staff responded that there will be an explanation in the 1716 Marion Park of the contributors <br />106that were involved in the creation of the park. <br />107 <br />108Commissioner Warzecha explained that she likes the simplicity of the name Unity Parkas <br />109unity is the key meaning behind the park and she feels that the name Unity Park makes the <br />110greatest impact. <br />111 <br />112Vice-Chair Baggenstoss suggested Unity Hill Park as it incorporates the Unity name and <br />113provides a location marker. <br />114 <br />115The Commission discussed the pros and cons of the names Unity Hill Park vs. Unity Park. <br />116 <br />117Chair O’Brien noted that the Unity Park name celebrates the broader unity of the whole city <br />118and embraces a larger idea instead of a specific location marker. <br />119 <br /> <br />
