Regular City Council Meeting
Monday, September 18, 2017
Page 24
more sense to delay putting the Fairview fire station parcel on the market until a
new lease was in place.
Councilmember McGehee opined that the city should not look at selling the Fair-
view fire station site now given the demonstrable need for the space. Since it's
dry and clean, and currently used for storage with the whole lower level full of
historical materials, Councilmember McGehee opined that it seemed short-sighted
for the city to rid itself of any space it already owns. Councilmember McGehee
agreed with Mayor Roe that the price the city was paying for leased space on an
annual basis came nowhere near the prices for new or expanded building or land
acquisition. Councilmember McGehee stated that her suggestion would be to se-
riously look at where the city could lease space at a reasonable rate, perhaps all in
one location, for a long-term lease. However, to consider a new facility, Coun-
cilmember McGehee opined that she could not see the city undertaking another
major project after the golf course clubhouse, but thought reasonable storage
space for maintenance could be workable.
Discussion ensued regarding potential space for the community band equipment
and supplies at the new fire station and allowing 24/7 access.
Councilmember Willmus opined that in the long-term it behooved the city to look
to control its own fate rather than relying on continued leasing of parcels, which
over time made it more difficult as uses change and properties develop. Coun-
cilmember Willmus opined that the city needed a plan in place to deal with space
needs and what will happen over time, but otherwise didn't disagree with short-
term remedies as suggested.
Councilmember Etten agreed that the Fairview fire station parcel should not be
sold until a better solution is found. As for providing space for the community
band in the area proposed for Historical Society storage, Councilmember Etten
questioned if there would be enough space to accommodate them too. Coun-
cilmember Etten questioned if the Fire Department would want the community
band to have 24/7 access to the new fire station. Otherwise, Councilmember Et -
ten agreed with the need to look at the temporary lease space option until a large
site became available and agreed with the long-term perspective provided by
Councilmember Willmus, noting how close the vote had been to the city's acqui-
sition of the property in question across the street.
Councilmember McGehee suggested that City Manager Trudgeon or Public
Works Director Culver talk to immediately surrounding communities about any
storage space they may have available; or their interest in sharing a facility of
some kind.
Mr. Culver thanked the City Council for tonight's helpful discussion.
8.
